Clothes
Introduction:
Islam cares about
all things which make a Muslim’s character perfect and righteous, in which good
appearance harmonizes with genuine essence. A healthy mind lives in a healthy
body.
●'Amr ibn Shu'aib
on the authority of his father and grandfather reported: The Messenger of Allah
ﷺ said, “Indeed,
Allah loves to see the sign of His favors upon His servants.”

①It is prohibited for a man to look at the private parts of another man, and for a woman to look at the private parts of another woman.
●It was narrated
from Abd Ar-Rahman ibn Abi-Sa'id AL-Khudri from his father that the Messenger
of Allah ﷺ said,
“No
woman should look at the private parts of another woman, and no man should look
at the private parts of another man.”

God says
﴾The men who guard their private parts
and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who
do so ─ for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward﴿
Chapter of the
Confederates. Verse NO 35
●Abu AL-Malih
AL-Hudhail reported:
Some women from the inhabitants of Hims entered upon
'A'ishah, so she said, “Are you among those women who enter (public)
bathhouses? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
say,
‘No woman removes her garments in other
than the house of her husband except that she has torn the screen between
herself and her Lord.’”

●It was narrated
from Jabir that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ said,
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then he is
not to let his wife enter the (public) bathhouse, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then he is not to
enter the (public)
bathhouse without a waist cloth (an Izaar), and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then he
is not to sit at a spread in which wine circulated.”

②The private parts of a man are between his umbilicus and knees.
●Zur'ah ibn
Muslim ibn Jarhad reported: The Prophet ﷺ
passed by Jarhad in the mosque and his thigh was exposed, so he (the Prophet)
said,

●Bahz ibn Bahr, from his father, from his grandfather,
reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Regarding our private parts ('Awrah), what of them must
we cover and what of them may we leave?
He said, “Protect your private parts except from
your wife or what your right hand possesses.”
I said, “O Messenger of Allah! What
about when some people are with others?”
He said, “If you are able to not let anyone see
it ('Awrah), then do so.”
I said, “What about a man when he is alone?”
He said, “Allah is most
deserving of being shy from Him.”

God says ﴾He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform
them of what they did on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, Allah is, of all
things, Knowing﴿
Chapter of
the Pleading Woman. Verse NO 7
③The Prophet has forbidden the garment which makes its wearer proud of himself and self-deluded like a peacock.
●It was narrated from Abi-Hurairah that the Messenger of
Allah ﷺ said, “The
part of the lower garment (Izaar)
which hangs below the ankles is
in the Fire.”

●It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of
Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever
arrogantly drags his garment, Allah will not look at him on the Day of
Resurrection.”
Umm Salamah said, “O Messenger of Allah, what
should women do with their hems?”
He said, “Let
them down a hand span.”
She
said, “Then their feet will be uncovered.”
He said, “Let them down a forearm’s length, but no more than that.”

④The Prophet has
forbidden extravagance in clothes.
Today, some of the rich boast about having a number of
clothes which equals to the number of weekdays or the number of days of a
month, indeed, some have a number of clothes that equals to the number of days
of a year. Their account will be difficult.
●Sahl ibn Mu'adh narrated from his father that the
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“Whoever gives up wearing (elegant and expensive) garments
out of humility to Allah while he is able to (afford it), Allah
will call him on the Day of Resurrection before all creations and will make him
choose whichever garment of faith (Imaan) he
likes to wear.”

֍'Umar ibn AL-Khattab said,
“Shall I not inform you of
what I deserve from Allah’s property (i.e., Muslim’s property)?
My smock (Jilbab)
for winter and summer, a riding animal that supports me for my pilgrimage and 'Umrah, and after that my food which equals to the food
of any man of Quraish.
I am not the highest or the lowest one of them, and by
Allah, I do not know whether this is lawful to me or not.”
⑤You thank God upon having a new cloth by giving the old one to the poor.
●Abu-Sa'id
Al-Khudri reported: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
wore a new garment he said,
“O Allah, all praise
is to You for clothing me with it (the
garment).
I
ask You for the goodness of it and the goodness of what it was made for, and I
ask Your protection from the evil of it and the evil of what it was made for.”

●It was narrated
from Abi-Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
said, “When any of you puts on his shoes, he
should put on the right one first, and when he takes them off, he should begin
with the left.
Let the right shoe be the first to be put on and the last to be
taken off.”

●It was narrated
from Ibn ᶦAbbas (May Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“Put
on white clothes because they are the best, and use them for enshrouding your
dead.”

⑥It is prohibited for men to wear silk clothes or gold.
●It was narrated
from Abi-Musa Al-Ash'ari that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
said, “Wearing silk and gold has been made
unlawful for males and lawful for females of my nation.”

●Ibn
'Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man wearing a gold ring. So, he (the
Prophet) pulled it off and threw it away saying,
“One
of you takes a live coal and puts it on his hand.”
It was said to
the man, after the Messenger had left, “Take your ring (of gold) and utilize
it”, whereupon he said, “No, by Allah, I will never take it when the Messenger
of Allah has thrown it.”

֍Silver
is lawful for men֎
●It was narrated
from Anas ibn Malik that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ
said,
“I have made a ring of silver and engraved
on it (these words): ‘Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.’ So none of you
should have the same engravement on his ring.”

●Abdullah ibn
'Umar reported: 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab saw a silk suit being sold, so he said,
“O
Messenger of Allah, why don’t you buy it so that you may wear it when delegates
come to you, and also on Fridays?”
The Prophet ﷺ
said, “This is only worn by the one who has no
share in the Hereafter.”

⑦God says ﴾And the male is not like the female﴿. So, the Prophet has cursed those who forego their nature.
●Ibn 'Abbas
reported:
The Prophet ﷺ has cursed the
effeminate men and women who imitate men and said, “Get
them out of your homes.”

●Abu-Hurairah
reported: The Messenger of Allah cursed the man who dressed like a woman and
the woman who dressed like a man.

Sunan Abi-Daoud. Book 34, Hadith 79
●Abu-Hurairah
reported: An effeminate man (Mukhanath) who had dyed his hands and feet
with Henna was brought to the Prophet ﷺ.
He asked, “What is the matter with this man?”
He was told, “Messenger of Allah! He imitates the look of women.”
So he issued
an order regarding him and he was banished to An-Naqi'.
People said, “Messenger
of Allah! Should we not kill him?”
He said, “I
have been prohibited from killing people who pray.”
